Landscape Plants

Plants are essential to creating beautiful Florida landscapes! We can determine the best flowers, plants, shrubs & trees to fit your needs. Plants may include annuals, perennials, butterfly plants, ground covers, wildflowers, vines, shrubs, trees, and palms.

Annuals

Despite the name, Southwest Florida annuals are planted different times of year to brighten up the landscape... the challenge is knowing which ones to plant when. Additionally, annuals may live for up to several years depending on conditions such as the amount of sun exposure.

Southwest Florida has two annual seasons, winter and summer, with different plants for each season. Some annuals are the same ones you may have planted for summers up North, certain ones do best here in winter’s cooler temperatures due to a climate that is similar to a Northern state spring and early summer.

While it may not seem obvious Southwest Florida does have seasons. In a typical year, Spring season runs April through early May. Summer season mid-May through early October. Autumn season mid-October through early December. Winter season mid-December through March.

To keep color in your landscape throughout the year including some perennials in the garden. For example, in autumn some summer annuals have run their course and it's too early to plant winter annuals. Your perennials can fill that time period with some color.

Perennials

Southwest Florida perennials can be a “bonus” to your landscaping. They can live several years or longer and have cyclical bursts of flowering. These small flowering perennials often have bloom colors of blue, purple, pink, red, yellow, and white. Some are considered butterfly plants that attract butterflies.

Perennials last three or more years compared to Annuals that typically last one season or year. Perennials may live only a year if they must deal with adverse conditions such as insufficient irrigation.

Perennials, unlike annuals, won’t give you constant flower color, because they go through cycles of bloom. Generally, perennials flower less often during our cooler winter months. You can create year-round garden color by interplanting perennials with seasonal annuals.

Proper irrigation helps both annuals and perennials thrive and flower in our Southwest Florida climate. Some of these flowering plants work in the partial shade, though most prefer more sun.
